To grow carrots from seeds, you’ll need to prepare a suitable planting area. Choose a location in your garden that receives full sun or partial shade. Carrots prefer loose, well-draining soil with a pH level of around 6.0 to 6.8.
Start by loosening the soil using a garden fork or tiller. Remove any rocks, weeds, or debris that may interfere with the growth of your carrot plants. Work in compost or well-rotted manure to improve the soil’s fertility and structure.
Sow the carrot seeds directly into the prepared soil. Create shallow furrows or trenches about half an inch deep and space them according to the recommended seed packet instructions. Carrot seeds are small, so it’s important to sow them thinly and evenly to avoid overcrowding.
Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and gently pat it down. Water the area thoroughly but gently to ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Maintain consistent moisture throughout the germination process, which usually takes 10 to 20 days.

Water the carrot plants regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to rotting or splitting of the roots. Applying a layer of mulch around the plants can help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth.
Carrots generally take around 60 to 80 days to reach maturity, but this can vary depending on the variety and growing conditions. Harvest the carrots when they have reached the desired size and color. Gently loosen the soil around the base of the plants and carefully lift the carrots from the ground. Rinse them off to remove any dirt or debris.
Freshly harvested carrots can be enjoyed raw as a snack or added to various dishes such as salads, soups, stews, or stir-fries. They can also be stored in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator for longer-term use.
